08:25 < vapier> in looking through the documentation, some places says "root is required" while in others it says this isnt required in T2-8.0+
08:25 < vapier> does T2 only support building via chroots ?
08:28 < vapier> and is there a way to cross-compile for a different architecture, but do so with a precompiled toolchain ? i dont need/want T2 rebuilding binutils/gcc/*clibc for me ... the handbook describes the stages, but doesnt seem to describe how to skip the early ones (0-4), and the ncurses config has the option hard selected
09:48 < rxr> re
09:49 < rxr> t2 needs root mostly so that permissions of created files are just right without unreliable preload libs
09:49 < rxr> while you could theoretically plug in another toolchain, t2 has no direct support for that
09:49 < rxr> but I guess some people do that already
09:49 < rxr> the point of t2 is also to build usable toolchains from scratch

16:56 < rogermason> hello.
16:59 < rxr> h
16:59 < rxr> i
16:59 < rogermason> I'm trying to build scientific/root on my G5. The root authors tell me I need to build it as a 32 bit application. For that I need libX11 built as a 32 bit version. How do I do that?
17:00 < rxr> ouh, not eas
17:00 < rxr> y
17:00 < rxr> that is t2 has no explicit support for this
17:00 < rxr> root includes enough assembly or so that it is that CPU speciic? won't just build for ppc64 ?=
17:02 < rogermason> When I try to build as 64 bit I get a seg fault part way through the build. The root authors tell me they don't support a 64 bit build on linux ppc (although, clearly, some of the machinery exists).
17:49 < rogermason> Any idea why t2 won't install texlive?:
17:50 < rogermason> ./scripts/Emerge-Pkg -missing=only -force texlive
17:50 < rogermason> > texlive checking ... Not installed. Added.
17:50 < rogermason> texlive> binutils checking ... New version (2.20.51.0.5 -> 2.20.51.0.10). Automatic update avoided.

17:50 < rogermason> texlive> xz checking ... Not installed. Added.
17:50 < rogermason> 0 packages scheduled to build.
17:51 < rxr> Emerge-Pkg sorts the packges by the build priority, if there is no config and thus cached config/*/packages then the sort result will be empty :-(
17:51 < rxr> guess I should add some safeguards there
17:58 < rogermason> so, if I copy the config dir from my 8.0 directory it should work?
18:07 < rxr> you have no config in the tree you emerge?
18:07 < rxr> you always need a config to build anything, ..
18:07 < rxr> yes, you can copy another versions config as base
18:14 < rogermason> yes, there is a config. I just selected texlive and now it is building. I don't understand then why I was able to start building root without it being selected in the config.
18:20 * rxr neither
18:20 < rxr> you built root the same way ?
18:29 < rogermason> yes.
