10:03 < koan> rxr: I sent you a mail about the qingy/emacs issue
10:11 < rxr> ok - so the check is there for a reason
10:11 < rxr> the thing is, we do not yet mark optional dependencies, thats on our TODO
10:12 < koan> ok
10:14 < koan> how do other distributions or build systems handle this?
10:14 < rxr> well - other distributions usually have a fixed binary with the exact features the company wants
10:15 < rxr> gentoo for example has all dependencies manually coded, we never wanted to spend human resources on such boring tasks
10:15 < rxr> that's why our deps are automatically determined
10:15 < rxr> we want, however, to mark optional deps in the future
10:15 < rxr> the question is how did you noticed this unconvienience? just that emerge-pkg did want to install an emacs ß
10:16 < koan> indeed
10:16 < koan> I found it strange for a login manager to depend on emacs
10:16 < rxr> so it was just the emerge, right=
10:16 < rxr> ?
10:16 < koan> indeed
10:17 < rxr> ok - we could add a "remove emacs" dependency mark to the meta data for now
10:17 < koan> if I would have already installed emacs, I probably wouldn't have seen it

11:26 < michael-i> Hi everyone. Just noticed that the bug tracker is down. I'm having some troubles building some basic images from trunk and wanted to see which (if any) bugs had already been reported.
11:28 < rxr> what issue do you experience ?
11:30 < michael-i> A variety of package build failures. Last week I had these problems and I'm currently retrying on a clean tree. I'll report back in a bit once this build gets that far.
11:32 < rxr> yes, please let us know in irc or the mailing-list
11:32 < michael-i> will do

14:21 < koan> how many parallell build jobs are optimal on a dual core AMD64?
14:22 -!- gw [n=gw@2001:44b8:62:7f0:21b:63ff:fe01:f18d] has joined #t2
14:22 < rxr> normally the number of cores
14:22 < rxr> dual core => 2
14:22 < koan> the standard value is 3, isn't that odd?
14:22 < rxr> hm
14:22 < rxr> hi gw
14:23 < rxr> koan: in which t2 tree? trunk or 7.0 ?
14:23 < gw> hi
14:23 < koan> trunk
14:23 < rxr> ah - ic
14:23 < rxr> I can reproduce on my code2duo laptop
14:26 < rxr> fixed
14:27 < CIA-4> rene * r31026 /trunk/scripts/config.in:
14:27 < CIA-4> * fixed cpu enumeration to only take cpu[0-9] into account, e.g.
14:27 < CIA-4> skip over the "cpuidle"
14:28 < rxr> koan: only for massively equipped systems cpus+n is a win
14:28 < rxr> e.g. to compensate for i/o etc.
14:30 < koan> ok

17:05 < freakz> hi, where are the './scripts' folder?
17:05 < rxr> in the t2 source?
17:06 < rxr> svn.exactcode.de/t2/trunk
17:06 < rxr> you read something from the t2 quick start / manual ?
17:07 < freakz> i installed from the binary iso (downloaded from the site)
17:07 < rxr> ah - ok, then you need to checkout the scripts in addition
17:07 < freakz> following the quick install guide
17:07 < rxr> cd /usr/src/
17:08 < rxr> svn co http://svn.exactcode.de/t2/trunk t2-trunk
17:09 < freakz> can i install packages from the source using these scripts?
17:10 < rxr> yes
17:10 < rxr> scripts/Emernge-Pkg
17:10 < rxr> you are the new ppc users from the other night?
17:12 < freakz> no
17:12 < rxr> ok
17:12 < freakz> i has a intel macbook
17:12 < rxr> anyway, with the trunk checkout you'll get the latest greatest packages, daily updates
17:13 < rxr> if you rather want to be on a more stable side of life you can checkout the 7.0 branch
17:13 < freakz> i guessed the trunk was only for distribution (iso) generation
17:14 < rxr> what did you install? some 7.0* or some "unstable" trunk build ?
17:14 < freakz> 7.0
17:14 < rxr> aha
17:14 < freakz> 7.0-rc2
17:14 < rxr> sounds good
17:15 < rxr> well - you can checkout the trunk or 7.0 sources, depending on whether you rather like more stable stuff, or the daily updates :-)
17:15 < rxr> emerging packages works from booth
17:17 < CIA-4> rene * r31027 /trunk/package/graphic/exact-image/exact-image.desc: * updated exact-image (0.6.3 -> 0.6.4)
17:32 < koan> btw rxr how do I update all installed packages to the newest version?
17:34 < freakz> can t2 generate an installable iso from a disk installation?
17:37 < rxr> well - not officially
17:37 < rxr> that is not integrated in some script
17:37 < rxr> however, if you want this you can do this
17:38 < rxr> e.g. the archivista target has a "publish" feature that re-packs the running system into a livecd
17:38 < rxr> koan: Emerge-Pkg -system or so
17:38 < rxr> yep Emerge-Pkg -system # it was
17:38 < koan> ok nice
17:40 < rxr> make sure to look at the output, e.g. with -dry-run before you massively recompile your system .-)
17:40 < rxr> I also sometimes just take a look what's new in the t2 world with -dry-run -system
17:40 < koan> :-)
17:41 < rxr> and then rebuild just parts of it that I want by cut'n pasting some packages form the list at the end of Emerge to:
17:41 < koan> ok
17:41 < rxr> scripts/Emerge -deps=none pkg1 pkg2, etc. # as pasted from the -system -dry-run
17:41 < koan> why the -deps=none?
17:41 < rxr> well - usually you already have all the deps
17:42 < rxr> and without it the emerge script would reschedule them for rebuild if the version differs
17:42 < rxr> thus when I just cut'n paste half of the list of Emerge-System this avoids building the other half automatically :-9
17:43 < koan> :-)
17:43 < rxr> but that might but be expert use, e.g. optimizing rebuild times on my G4 cube etc. :-)
17:58 < freakz> there are a way to remove unneeded dependencies automaticaly?
17:58 < rxr> at which step?
17:59 < rxr> usually manually, but in the future we want to annotate the .desc files with optional deps
18:01 < freakz> when i remove a package and there are a library that was only used for it, then the library is now unneeded
18:01 < rxr> ah - ok - this way
18:01 < rxr> no, not yet
18:06 < rxr> mtr: I updated e17 a little, had to use some mixed revisions, unfortunatley, because some modules did not build from the same revision
18:06 < rxr> mtr: e starts, but I do not like the new default theme either, too blurry :-(
18:06 < rxr> mtr: just wanted to give you a heads up and the special note about hte mixed revisions for the next update
18:06 < rxr> cu - then
18:06 < rxr> have a good night

20:41 < rxr> hm - koan that's unfortunate
20:43 < koan> maybe also an optional dependency? or is it really needed?
20:45 < rxr> if it fails otherwise? maybe they use python to generate something
20:45 < rxr> I updated the .cache
20:46 < CIA-4> rene * r31029 /trunk/package/xorg/xcb-proto/xcb-proto.cache: * updated xcb-proto.cache
20:46 < koan> hm apparently xcb-proto installs a lot of python files in /usr/X11R7/lib/python2.6/site-packages/xcbgen/
20:47 < koan> but as far as I can see, it doesn't run python at build time, it only checks for a python installation
20:47 < koan> oh and it byte compiles the python modules
20:48 < koan> so I guess it does need python at build time
20:50 < koan> why did you call it unfortunate? because you don't like this 'heavy' dependency?
20:56 < rxr> yes, all the new deps ... also not so nice for embedded systems
20:57 < rxr> always requires extra care for thoses
20:58 < rxr> (also I'm not too much in python and rarely need it on my systems ...)
20:58 < freakz> why t2 install dietlibc on my system?
20:58 < rxr> because we use it by default for initrd stuff
20:58 < rxr> if you care too much you could define a t2 target without it
20:59 < rxr> but this setup served us well for years
20:59 < rxr> e.g. also optimized initrd sitze

22:53 < koan> hi rxr I had to build intltool before xkeyboard-config built, can you update the cache file with this dependency?
22:55 < mpp> yes some cache files need updating
22:55 < mpp> but that's nothing new
22:55 < mpp> i brought it up several times
22:56 < mpp> so unless any dev submits fresh cache files
22:56 < mpp> you 'l have to update them on your local tree
