14:00 < tr1> hi rxr
14:00 < tr1> whats new in the t2 world ?
14:00 < tr1> do you have any thoughts about the build problems in trunk ?
14:00 < rxr> from the last days ?
14:01 < rxr> which build errors ?
14:02 < tr1> hm a not build erros but i wasn't able to get a console after booting a new t2 build cdrom
14:02 < rxr> I mean - trunk probably has some more than 7.0 but it should not be too bad, is it?
14:02 < rxr> on the reference builder I have some hundred modifications
14:02 < rxr> so I do not exactly work on trunk, but the uebertrunk of future changes and updates ...
14:03 < rxr> 2998 builds total, 2604 completed fine, 394 with errors, 0 to go.
14:03 < rxr> given this many changes:
14:03 < rxr> # svn st | wc -l
14:03 < rxr> 293
14:03 < rxr> it does not look that bad :-)
14:03 < rxr> my plan is to release 7.0-final in in the next >7 <14 days
14:04 < tr1> ah ok ok 394 with errors is not that much - i mean i haven't build erros - just that thing that i can't do anything after booting - because there is no console - it just says type stone ect... but i can't do that - very strange...
14:05 < tr1> should i better use 7.0 - but what about the iwlwifi stuff and new packages i have to backport them ?
14:05 < rxr> ah - yes this udev regression
14:05 < rxr> I put udev and iwlwifi fixing to the top of my TODO
14:06 < rxr> regarding new packages, you can tell us updates that are nice to have in 7.0-stable so we merge them officially
14:06 < rxr> and/or you can update some packages by installing 7.0 and then emerging from trunk
14:11 < tr1> ah ok that would be ok - so i might use 7.0 for now ?
14:11 < tr1> hm what are the things that should work with 7.0 ?
14:13 < rxr> everyhing "should" work in 7.0 :-)
14:13 < tr1> :-)
14:13 < tr1> the udev iwlwifi things are fixed in 7.0 ?
14:18 < rxr> iwlwifi might not yet fixed on 7.0
14:18 < rxr> susan's laptop has some iwlwifi chip, but she does not use it that often
14:18 < rxr> I'll ping her about it
14:18 < tr1> i also have a iwlwifi chip
14:19 < rxr> ff you test quicker than she, please fill a bugs.t2-project.org
14:21 < tr1> ok i will do this :-) (the trunk iwlwifi package just works fine here - only thing is to rename the binary ucode file to ...-1.ucode file)
14:21 < tr1> with udev errors you mean the messages on the booting ?
14:22 < rxr> no, that the terminal devices are not named correctly
14:22 < rxr> and you can not login (or so)
14:29 < tr1> ah ok but this is a 8.0 trunk problem or do i also have this on 7.0 ?
14:30 < rxr> the udev terminal device problem is trunk only, due to an udev update
14:31 < tr1> ah ok didn't know that udev can cause these problem
14:36 < rxr> udev controls every device node in /dev, on modern linux distributions
14:37 < rxr> if somehting is wrong with udev you have wrong /dev nodes or none at all
14:37 < tr1> ah now it make sense even ttys are in /dev...
14:38 < rxr> yeah - any device, beside network devices live in /dev ...
14:38 < tr1> what will be new in 7.0 compare to 6.0 or even 8.0 ?
14:38 < rxr> 7.0 is nearly trunk
14:38 < tr1> hm thats interessting right - network devices live not in /dev - hm funny :-)
14:38 < rxr> only hte last 2-3 fun updates are not in 7.0
14:38 < tr1> what was the 2-3 fun updates in 7.0 ?
14:38 < rxr> it's more ike 200 to 300 fun updates
14:39 < rxr> well - 7.0 was branched like 3 months ago
14:39 < rxr> all updates go to trunk
14:39 < rxr> and only security / important stuff is merged into 7.0
14:39 < rxr> so all the unimportant, toy tools and so on stuff is not in 7.0
14:39 < rxr> http://www.t2-project.org/releases/7.0.html
14:39 < rxr> http://www.t2-project.org/releases/
14:40 < rxr> over 6.0, 7.0 is all new, nearly every package received an update between 6.0 and 7.0
14:41 < tr1> hm i still like the fresher stuff from 8.0
14:41 < tr1> only that udev problem isn't that nice :-)
14:41 < rxr> yeah - and the regressions those daily, instant updates cause :-)
14:41 < rxr> yeah, yeah
14:41 < rxr> it's just that we, at ExactCODE are so overworked
14:41 < tr1> do you have already seen the problem or any idea how to fix it
14:42 < rxr> look what the udev update changes, analyze and hange
14:42 < tr1> maybe i can help with the udev problem
14:42 < rxr> maybe udev installs it's own additional rules that mess someting up, or it's just our t2 config using obsolete, removed stuff etc. pp.
14:42 < rxr> udev is changing too frequently / randomly in my opinion
14:42 < tr1> ah ok i will do that - till now i even haven`t the idea that it could be udev
14:43 < rxr> tr1: the symptom is that you can not login, right?
14:43 < tr1> but there are no udev alternativ ?
14:43 < tr1> yes, no login
14:43 < tr1> i even looked at the init scripts
14:43 < rxr> the no login is becaue no /dev/vc/* nodes exist anymore
14:43 < rxr> you only need to look what inside udev changed or if the config is messed up / out of sync
14:43 < tr1> normaly i have a shell after booting a t2 iso and then i can type "stone" and go for it
14:44 < rxr> re: u/dev alternative: not yet. u/dev is the replacement for the not so beloved devfs
14:44 < rxr> aside devfs being in-kernel and not as flexible as udev, we at least never ever had a single devfs problem and it just worked
14:44 < rxr> devfs is now gone frim the mainline kernel, and only u/dev available
14:45 < rxr> one coul a "not changing as frequently / randomly" implementation of the user-space part
14:45 < rxr> because the nearly only thing that constantly causes new problem is the ever changing user-space code ...
14:45 < rxr> that is e.g. reading it's config file (even the config file format changes all the time, btw.) and then doing it's actions
14:46 < tr1> so the world would be great without changing user-space code :-)
14:48 < rxr> yeah - at least for me :-)
