I'm assuming that a generic i686 build will work OK. 13:08 < rxr> yes, x86 certainly is the most tested, incl. wine & co 15:50 -!- mqueiros [~mqueiros@a83-132-1-4.cpe.netcabo.pt] has joined #t2 16:58 < rogermas`> in the past I have installed T2 over other linux distros by copying the initrd and kernel from the iso to /boot on the hard-drive. I then insert a usb stick, boot into the new initrd/kernel and direct T2 to the second stage *.bz2 file on the stick. For some reason, on this machine, that does not work and I get an error message saying that stage_2.tar.bz2 is not a proper tar archive. 16:59 < rxr> hm 16:59 < rxr> specified the right bz2 decompressor, argument? 17:00 < rogermas`> no. when T2 asked where to get the stage 2 file I just entered /dev/sdb1, which is my USB stick. 17:00 < rxr> do you use a recent initrd? support for bzip2 decompression is new 17:02 < rogermas`> how recent? The initrd came from an 8.0 iso. 17:02 < rxr> maybe post 8.0 17:03 < rogermas`> OK. That is likely the problem. I'll try again later this week with the initrd/kernel off my USB stick. 17:03 < rxr> r37646 | rene | 2010-09-21 13:34:30 +0200 (Tue, 21 Sep 2010) | 2 lines 17:03 < rxr> * added mini bunzip2 to embutils 17:04 < rxr> no, it's in 8.0, hm 17:04 < rxr> ak, no isn't 17:04 < rxr> http://svn.exactcode.de/t2/branches/8.0/package/base/embutils/embutils.desc 17:04 < rxr> ^- no bunzip2 in there 17:05 < rogermas`> Thanks. Last time I did this I must have got everything off the USB stick, which is comparatively up to date. 17:06 < rogermas`> None of this would be necessary if my aluminum imac would boot from USB. 17:06 < rxr> yeah, ... 17:06 < rxr> it does in EFI mode, not in legacy BIOS mode, ... 17:06 < rxr> we should start making our x86 boot stuff EFI aware :-( 17:06 < rogermas`> how do i put it in efi mode? 17:07 < rxr> well it is 17:07 < rxr> you "just" need an USB drive with EFI boot files on it 17:07 < rxr> like the native Mac OS X install media and installed HDs are, ... 17:07 < rxr> you can do so using ELILO, or maybe grub2 17:07 < rxr> that is it is custom tinkering at the moment 17:08 < rxr> http://www.t2-project.org/packages/elilo.html 17:08 < rogermas`> I see. So the usb stick would have to be formatted (at least in part) as HFS+? 17:08 < rxr> IIRC I test booted an USB stick on my aging MacBook Pro sometime last year 17:08 < rxr> I think good 'ole FAT works, too 17:08 < rxr> but yes, it must be either FAT or HFS 17:08 < rxr> at least the "boot" partition 17:09 < rxr> or better yet "EFI" system partition 17:09 < rxr> elilo and grub2 can certainly then load the kernel and initrd form other-FSs, too 17:09 < rxr> note that I'm just speaking out loud, I do not want to push you to waste your time trying that out now :-) 17:10 < rogermas`> OK. it is vfat but I dont use grub: syslinux instead because of machines that won't boot using grub. 17:12 < rogermas`> no, I'm not going to mess with it at this point. I have a pretty good system on my USB stick and there's not much incentive to break it right now, especially as I'm busy teaching and I want the imac converted to T2 asap. 17:13 < rxr> just take a latest kernel and initrd for the usb boot stick 17:13 < rogermas`> yep. 18:30 < CIA-37> rene * r38650 /trunk/package/network/stunnel/stunnel.desc: * updated stunnel (4.34 -> 4.35) 18:57 -!- mqueiros [~mqueiros@a83-132-1-4.cpe.netcabo.pt] has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat] 22:07 -!- mqueiros_ [~mqueiros@a213-22-191-16.cpe.netcabo.pt] has joined #t2 --- Log closed Tue Feb 08 00:00:06 2011
