Still trying to boot a machine that won't boot with grub. I made a usb install key for trunk. Trunk on the key has lilo. I boot from the usb key and run stone, but do not install grub when asked. I untar lilo from the install key into the ramdisk's /etc and create an etc/lilo.conf file. When I try to umount the root filesystem (umount /mnt/target/) I'm told the device is busy. Indeed, /mnt/target/dev is mounted and 13:47 < rogermason> won't umount. Any ideas? 13:55 < Baldzius> you can't umount /dev? 13:56 < rxr> Baldzius: does qt4 build in your tree? 13:57 < Baldzius> I think it did 13:57 < Baldzius> never had any problems with it 13:57 < rxr> Baldzius: it does in my main working copy, but on a second, very clean reference test it fails with some "xml stuff is eabled but execptions are not, please build with --enable-exceptions, ..."# 13:57 < Baldzius> hm 13:58 < Baldzius> I remember this error 13:58 < rxr> me neither, until this box's build 13:58 < rogermason> umount /dev -> /mnt/target/dev/: device is busy 13:58 < rxr> QtXmlPatterns was requested, but it can't be built due to exceptions being disabled. 13:58 < Baldzius> I have to clean build on VM 13:58 < Baldzius> none of them crashed on QT 13:58 < Baldzius> s/to/two/ 13:58 < rxr> ok, thanks 13:58 < rxr> will continue to take a look on it 13:59 < Baldzius> both 8 and trunk 13:59 < Baldzius> but I had this error before 13:59 < Baldzius> rogermason: is lsof available? 14:00 < rogermason> Unfortunately, no. 14:00 < Baldzius> maybe rxr has any ideas? 14:01 < rxr> what's the prob? 14:01 < rxr> I just came back from lunch 14:02 < Baldzius> rogermason has some problems unmounting /mnt/target/dev 14:02 < rxr> maybe an shell still left with working directory in there ? 14:03 < rogermason> how do I find out? 14:03 < rxr> did you run a shell manually? 14:04 < rxr> changed to another VT, do stuff there? 14:04 < rxr> just toggle thru the VT ans see what path in the prompt you see 14:04 < rxr> did you start anything else manually? 14:06 < rxr> Baldzius: I did some attempts to improve Emerge experience the last days, including getting new, less noisy .cache files into the trunk 14:06 < Baldzius> yeah I saw that 14:06 < Baldzius> good stuff 14:07 < rxr> more to come 14:07 < rxr> we need to get this end-user experience a little btter to attract more real users, beside the successful use in the embedded device space :-) 14:09 < rogermason> I only used 1 VT. I ran stone, declined to install grub (because I need lilo instead). untarr'd lilo from the install medium into the ramdisk. Created a etc/lilo.conf witk zile, then tried to umount /mnt/target so I can run lilo to install it to the mbr. 14:10 < rxr> strange 14:10 < rxr> you are done right? 14:10 < rxr> you could run "sync" and just reboo then, ... 14:12 < rogermason> but I must run lilo or the machine won't boot from hd. As far as I understand, lilo has to be run on an unmounted device. 14:13 < rxr> hm - have not uses lilo in ages 14:13 < rxr> though in theory T2 has lilo installation support anyway 14:14 < Baldzius> never liked and never used lilo 14:14 < rxr> well, 10y ago I did use lilo, too, long time though :-) 14:14 < rxr> rogermason: did you inject lilo using a real t2 package? 14:14 < rxr> the t2 package has stone menu support and should be possible to configure smoothly 14:15 < rxr> at least it worked the last time I tested it 14:15 < rogermason> I built lilo in trunk. Is that what you mean? 14:15 < rxr> and you already installed (unpacked it?) 14:17 < rogermason> As I said, I untarred it manually from the pkg directory on the install medium. 14:18 < rxr> which pkg directory do you mean? 14:20 < rogermason> /mnt/source/9.0-trunk-generic-x86-linux/pkgs/ 14:21 < rxr> hm - don't know if that gives you anything 14:21 < rogermason> well, I have lilo in the ramdisk's sbin directory. 14:21 < rxr> beside placing the vanilla tar there (but I think that would not make the installer pick it up) the most quick thing would be to untar it in the new root, /mnt/target 14:22 < rxr> is lilo inside this self build media? 14:22 < rxr> if so it should have been just inatlled and stone ask you whether to set lilo up, ... 14:23 < rogermason> untaring in /mnt/target is no use if I must run lilo on the unmounted device. 14:24 < rogermason> I was never offered the chance to set up any bootloader other than grub. I don't know what you mean by "is lilo inside..." 14:26 < rxr> lilo need to be installed in the newly installed system 14:26 < rxr> also I do not think lilo has anything todo with unmounting 14:26 < rxr> in fact it is certainly ever installed from inside a running system 14:26 < rxr> if you unpack lilo in /mn/target 14:26 < rxr> and re-run stone it will certainly ask you whether to setup ilo 14:26 < rxr> lilo even 14:27 < rogermason> OK, I will try that. 14:44 < rogermason> Yes! It worked like a charm. many, many thanks. I take it that stone reconfigures itself depending what is found on /mnt/target/? 14:49 < rxr> stone is only the skeleton, the packages install plugins, so there is a grub "plugin", lilo "plugin", ... 14:50 < rxr> so yes, you can call that "reconfigures itself" 18:48 < CIA-33> aldas * r36954 /trunk/package/filesystem/nilfs-utils/nilfs-utils.desc: * updated nilfs-utils (2.0.13 -> 2.0.18) 19:10 -!- mjungwirth2 [~mjungwirt@213.174.252.112] has joined #t2 19:30 -!- TobiX [tobias@zoidberg.org] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out] 19:34 -!- TobiX [tobias@88.198.6.61] has joined #t2 19:35 < CIA-33> aldas * r36956 /trunk/package/network/ntp/ntp.desc: * updated ntp (4.2.6p1 -> 4.2.6p2) 19:35 < CIA-33> aldas * r36957 /trunk/package/network/keepalived/ (keepalived.desc locations.patch): * updated keepalived (1.1.13 -> 1.2.0) 19:43 < CIA-33> aldas * r36959 /trunk/package/network/hostapd/hostapd.desc: * updated hostapd (0.7.1 -> 0.7.2) 19:45 < CIA-33> aldas * r36955 /trunk/package/network/squid/squid.desc: * updated squid (3.1.4 -> 3.1.5) 19:52 < CIA-33> aldas * r36962 /trunk/package/network/jpilot/jpilot.desc: * updated jpilot (1.6.2 -> 1.8.0) 20:01 < CIA-33> aldas * r36963 /trunk/package/network/snownews/ (snownews.conf snownews.desc): * updated snownews (1.5.11 -> 1.5.12) 20:09 -!- Baldzius [~aldas@87-198-133-94.ptr.magnet.ie] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 20:18 < CIA-33> aldas * r36961 /trunk/package/network/pilot-link/pilot-link.desc: * updated pilot-link (0.12.3 -> 0.12.5) 20:18 < CIA-33> aldas * r36960 /trunk/package/network/argus/ (argus-makefile.patch argus.desc pcap-bpf.patch): * updated argus (2.0.6 -> 3.0.2) 20:18 < CIA-33> aldas * r36958 /trunk/package/network/duplicity/duplicity.desc: * updated duplicity (0.6.08 -> 0.6.09) 20:54 -!- mqueiros [~mqueiros@a83-132-38-228.cpe.netcabo.pt] has joined #t2 21:56 < koan> any tips about getting the keyboard working in X? 21:56 < koan> I use the kbd driver, and according to the Xorg log X recognizes the keyboard, but I can't type anything 22:10 -!- mjungwirth2 [~mjungwirt@213.174.252.112] has quit [Quit: Nettalk6 - www.ntalk.de] 22:40 -!- Toonami [~Toonami@ppp-70-133-216-127.dsl.tpkaks.swbell.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 22:45 -!- Toonami [~Toonami@adsl-69-149-128-120.dsl.tpkaks.sbcglobal.net] has joined #t2 23:54 < koan> ok after rebuilding hal it works --- Log closed Tue Jul 27 00:00:49 2010
