10:30 < CIA-4> rene * r30061 /trunk/package/xorg/xf86-input-evdev/xf86-input-evdev.desc: * updated xf86-input-evdev (2.0.3 -> 2.0.4)
10:30 < CIA-4> rene * r30062 /trunk/package/xorg/xf86-video-intel/xf86-video-intel.desc: * updated xf86-video-intel (2.4.0 -> 2.4.1)
10:32 < koan> does anyone here run T2 on PowerPC?
10:32 < rxr> yep, sure
10:32 < rxr> on half of our boxes ...
10:32 < koan> ah nice
10:32 < koan> I'd like to give it a try on my PowerMac G5
10:32 < rxr> sure, should just work
10:33 < koan> do I have to use the ppc or the ppc64 architecture?
10:33 < rxr> you have to use the ppc64 variant
10:33 < koan> thanks
10:33 < rxr> the ppc32 linux kernel does not boot on the 64bit PPC chips ...
10:33 < koan> yeah I know, but Debian uses a 64 bit kernel and 32 bit userspace packages
10:33 < rxr> (although the 32bit programs of course just work, just not the kernel)
10:33 < rxr> our ppc64 images have 64bit user-space ...
10:33 < koan> nice
10:34 < rxr> (though with t2 you could build yourself other variants, and for sparc64 we actually also default to 32bit user-space for several reasons)
10:36 < koan> and how's the 64 bit performance of the applications? I read a lot of applications are slower because the address pointers use more memory
10:37 < rxr> well - as the binaries utilze newer instructions than the debian 32bit binaries compatible with the first powerpc cpu the performance is probably at least on par
10:37 < koan> ok
10:37 < rxr> but as we decided people with a 64bit CPU probably want to access more than 4GB of RAM or mmap files larger than 3GB we build 64bit by default
10:38 < rxr> of course the debian way is "just build your mysql for 64bit", but as you need all the utilzing libraries and so on as 64bit flavour this usually becomes quite a mess
10:38 < koan> indeed
10:38 < koan> okay, I will give it a try when I find some time
10:38 < rxr> if you want to benchmark we would be intersted in the results :-)
10:39 < rxr> and if you like, you can use t2 to build 32bit ppc binaries for an otherwise 64bit kernel, likewise
10:39 < rxr> we do this for sparc64, because our sparc hardware is so aging and slow ... :-(
10:39 < koan> what would be the best option for desktop usage?
10:40 < rxr> the desktop target
10:41 < rxr> but I just notice our last desktop target build was for 6.0.0 from August 2006
10:41 < rxr> maybe better use the recent minimal-powerpc64-g5 build from 7.0-rc2
10:41 < koan> and when is 8.0 coming?
10:41 < rxr> first will be 7.0 - hopefully in the next days / weeks
10:41 < rxr> 8.0 will be branched off of trunk later
10:42 < koan> ok
10:42 < rxr> we just updated to gcc-4.3 in trunk and have the usual regressions to fix :_)
10:42 < rxr> though in general trunk works quite good (except corner case / not so important packages - as usual after a major GCC update ...)
10:42 < rxr> 8.0 will probably be be end of Q4 or even Q1/09
10:43 < koan> you are one of the lead developers?
10:43 < rxr> yes
10:44 < koan> are there many developers?
10:44 < rxr> t2 is still a rather small project, but anyone welcome
10:44 < rxr> we have 25 people with SVN write access
10:44 < rxr> there is a worldmap on: http://www.t2-project.org/startpage/
10:45 < koan> I discovered the project with the news of the latest Puppy Linux some months ago
10:45 < koan> I bookmarked it and thought it would be interesting to take a look at it, I like the flexible architecture
10:46 < rxr> t2 is also more and more use to cross compile linux appliances
10:46 < rxr> e.g. for AVR32, ARM, MIPS company products
10:46 < rxr> t2 can nowadays cross compile nearly 50% of the packages
10:46 < koan> the architectures list is already impressive
10:49 < CIA-4> rene * r30064 /trunk/package/ruby/ruby/ruby.desc: * updated ruby (1.8.7-p71 -> 1.8.7-p72) - SECURITY
10:49 < CIA-4> rene * r30063 /trunk/package/develop/mercurial/mercurial.desc: * updated mercurial (1.0.1 -> 1.0.2)
10:50 < koan> I will hang around here some time and follow the discussions, in a couple of weeks I will have some time to install T2, thanks already for the information
10:50 < rxr> you're welcome
10:51 < rxr> in some weeks there should also be the final 7.0 out
10:51 < rxr> as desktop build, so with more pre-built packages
10:51 < koan> perfect
10:53 < CIA-4> rene * r30065 /trunk/package/network/cherokee/cherokee.desc: * updated cherokee (0.5.6 -> 0.8.0), including updating some informational tags
10:56 < CIA-4> rene * r30066 /trunk/package/x11/xclip/ (. xclip.cache xclip.desc): * added xclip (0.11) - A command line interface to the X11 clipboard
