15:45 < Demian> hello rebe. u use xen right r^2?
15:45 < rxr> yep
15:47 < Demian> i wanted to know if with xen i could host windows workstations in a linux host, not using a an amd x2 or intel ivt processor?
15:47 < rxr> yes
15:47 < rxr> you can
15:47 < Demian> and it is done with paravirtualization or full-virtualization
15:48 < rxr> however it is not perfectly easy
15:48 < rxr> using the new kvm with a patched qemu might be a bit more easy to do
15:48 < rxr> though not as an professional sollution as xen is
15:48 < rxr> in Xen you run your windows then with full virtualization
15:48 < rxr> I think Xen also used Qemu code bits for this
15:50 < Demian> brb.. taking a look at kvm
15:51 < rxr> kvm is shiny new
15:51 < rxr> watch out for bugs I would say .-)
15:51 < rxr> it depends if you want a permanent setup (then go Xen) or just loosly run windows guests ... then rather kvm or so
15:52 < rxr> but maybe I do not have the whole kvm picture and it becomes a professional permanent setup and management environment as well
15:53 < Demian> i want this to host windows workstations for software testing purposes
15:55 < Demian> KVM requires intel ivt or amd x2 processors, as i see.
15:55 < rxr> yes, as Xen does for Windows
16:01 < Demian> xen also pretends to be merged in the linux kernel, as kvm.
16:13 < rxr> hm? not that I have seen
16:20 < Demian> they pretend. but i am not sure of that now.

18:40 < rxr> quite interesting to read GCC SPARC assembly output ...
18:40 < rxr> .o(and how it miscompiles it ...)
18:40 < rxr> ojh: how are you these days ?
18:41 -!- misl is now known as grandpa
18:41 -!- grandpa is now known as misl
18:44 < rxr> the compiler optimizes 3 single char byte loads where the later ones might not even be valid due to over the string buffer into a single DWORD load offset one before the first byte ...
18:44 < rxr> that is then one before the actual buffer is valid ...
18:44 < rxr> and it potentially loads more than in the mapped memory of the process ...
18:44 * rxr wonders how gcc thinks it can do that insane things ...
18:44 < ojh> Hi rxr
18:44 < rxr> and it is not even the often buggy -Os, just pure -O1 ...
18:47 < ojh> rxr: I'm OK, just got set up with cable internet after moving. I seem to have just lost my job, but my room mate just started his dream job and he owes me about 3 months of his back rent.
18:49 < rxr> "seems to have lost"? does not sound very concret ... ?
18:50 < ojh> rxr: Other then little things like that I have made a lot of progress on the Zirconium Desktop project. Most of the systems are fully database driven now. All the core plumbing is resonably done and I need to start on the configuration GUIs (Odd, some people don't think cmposing SQL queries by hand is very user friendly ;-) )
18:52 < ojh> rxr: Yes, about the job. I was through a TEMP AGENCY and the employer said when I came in to work this morning "We have to decided to not continue your assignment with us . . ." I have to do a postmortim with the temp agency to see exactly what happened.
18:57 < ojh> rxr: But I have bigger fish to try and fry, the tech support call center I used to work for just got the tier 1 & 2 support contracts for Windows Vista. They will be hireing a _LOT_ of techs for that one. And that call center is quite close to where I now live.
