05:28 < ojh> Has anyone tested any Autopackages on T2 yet?
05:30 < mnemoc_> Autopackages?
05:31 < ojh> I have got some Autopackage software to install on ROCK 2.0 (have yet to try any on T2)
05:32 < mnemoc_> what do you understand by 'autopackage software'?
05:33 < ojh> http://autopackage.org/ - In case I assumed wrong about you knowing about the project.
05:35 < mnemoc_> i have never tried that, and i don't see it usefull at least for me... but try :)
05:36 < mnemoc_> the installer is beatiful anyway :)
05:37 < ojh> Perhaps the distributions (like T2) should make it a "feature" to do aggressive testing against the major AP based packages. To guaranty (to a reasonable extent) that Autopackage distributed application software will install.
05:41 < ojh> I am kind of considering a test suite of programs that represent a wide range of software people want to install using a distro neutral binary installer. Perhaps a big automated script that can be used by distro developers to get a sort of compatibility report. Most things that are problems are just missing *.so symlinks or compatibility libraries.
05:41 < mnemoc_> we have to worry about supporting ourselves before supporting every package distribution system some invent, but if you can do the research, you are welcome
05:42 < ojh> I was just fielding the idea for feedback.
05:43 < mnemoc_> :)
05:45 < ojh> But I do see that making compatibility testing with the major Autopackages an advertised **feature** of a distribution as an advantage to that distro.
05:45 < mnemoc_> personally i am to busy to reasearch anything, and i need to solve many^3 issue about package managment inside before seeing more features
05:46 < mnemoc_> you said you did it for ROCK
05:46 < mnemoc_> if it works on rok it should work here
05:47 < ojh> Yes, I can see that. The management details I am attempting to follow on the ML make my head hurt. You have your jobs cut out :)
05:47 < mnemoc_> we just afew deevelopers for a big goal
05:47 < mnemoc_> if you join us in this field you would get all our support
05:50 < ojh> And seem to be achieving it quite well. I find T2 quite comparable in terms of design, quality and range compared to the "big name" distros.
05:50 < ojh> And the package selection is getting to be quite large :)
05:51 < mnemoc_> we need to categorize that forest before it gets out of our few hands
05:52 < mnemoc_> current categorized are useless to do a target
05:52 < mnemoc_> categoriazration*
05:52 < mnemoc_> categorization*
05:52 < mnemoc_> aaa... :\
05:52 < _Ragnar_> we need some 'broke in the current revision' flag ;D
05:53 < ojh> IC
05:54 < mnemoc_> _Ragnar_: trunk is not expected to be always stable, it's the devel branch, use it if you are brave :)
05:58 < ojh> The problem I am coming up with is that I lake to compile my programs to ROX AppDir packages and subtle compatibility issues are coming up between releases of T2. Most of the time I can fix the problem by adding a symlink for a requested .so file. This is what made me start thinking of a more formal binary compatibility test suite to make sure that each release maintains a high degree of application level binary compatibility.
05:59 < mnemoc_> after rc1 i'm doing as much as possible to keep compatibility on 2.1 tree
05:59 < mnemoc_> on beta-s there were to many changes
05:59 < mnemoc_> deep changes
06:01 < mnemoc_> we also need smarter dependencies, multi instances and something like apt-get
06:02 < mnemoc_> i would love to see an T2 fetcher looking like those AP screenshots
06:02 < mnemoc_> and of course able to udpate safely
06:02 < ojh> Its a rather large task that basically would involve many compiled binaries and generating reports based on the output of 'ldd'. Of course that may not catch subtle glitches that occur when libraries break binary compatibility slightly between minor versions.
06:03 < mnemoc_> but i really don't worry about intra-distro compatibility
06:07 < ojh> True, yet I can see the wider value of the tool I propose . . . if one distro can use it to maintain internal binary compatibility between versions then why not others use it to guage compatibility issues too? But that's not my main concern ether. I just want to be able to take my binary AppDirs with me when I upgrade :)
06:09 < mnemoc_> my job is to ensure that will happen on 2.1
06:10 < ojh> And I wish you the best on that. I am already pleased with the beta and the LiveCD rocks :-D
06:10 < mnemoc_> before rc1 nothing is warrantied :p

16:53 < valentin> veki: how did you build that package ? with ./scripts/Emerge-Pkg or in a complete target build ?
16:56 < veki> in a compete target build
16:56 < valentin> can you tell from the logs what command failed with that error message ?
16:57 < valentin> btw, /admin is a stupid directory ...
16:58 < veki> OK, I will check it, just a second
17:00 < veki> it was copying commands to $altdir
17:01 < veki> actuallt cp cannot stat..... It seems to me that id did have problme with chpst directory
17:01 < veki> I put in Config that it should be optimized for Pentium 3 platform
17:02 < valentin> was the target directory created before ?
17:04 < veki> uhm, you ask did I make target directory before?
17:04 < veki> Did I understand you well?
17:06 < valentin> yes
17:06 < valentin> no
17:06 < valentin> :)
17:06 < valentin> not _you_
17:06 < valentin> the Makefile of course
17:06 < valentin> just take a look if build/..../admin/runit-1.2.1/command exists
17:07 < veki> in error.log file?
17:07 < valentin> no :)
17:07 < valentin> in the t2 directory there is a subdir called build
17:08 < veki> OK
17:08 < valentin> within this subdir there is a subdir for each build you do. that dir contains the root fs of the build.
17:08 < veki> OK
17:09 < valentin> if you look inside, you'll find the target system inside, that is you will see all the toplevel dirs like /usr, /bin, /sbin and so on ...
17:09 < veki> I see all those directories except admin
17:11 < veki> there is /var/adm only but there i sno any admin directory
17:12 < valentin> well, a normal unix system is not supposed to have an admin subdir...
17:12 < veki> yes, but why runit complained?
17:12 < valentin> because it did not create this subdir
17:12 < valentin> and tried to copy files ther
17:12 < valentin> for whatever reason
17:13 < veki> uhm, so what I have to do in order to build target
17:14 < valentin> the maintainer of runit is mnemoc_, he should be able to tell you about that admin dir. for the moment just ignore that error and build on
17:14 < valentin> if i have some time tonight i could take a look myself
17:14 < veki> OK, I will wait mnemoc_to appear and ask for suggestion
17:15 < veki> OK?
17:16 < valentin> your wish, Sire... :)

18:42 < veki> OK, I have to be out let say 20 minutes and I will be back

20:24 < valentin> hi veki
20:26 < veki> hi
20:27 < veki> please explain once again how to build pakage for t2
20:30 < valentin> how to build ? into your running t2 system use ./scripts/Emerge-Pkg
20:31 < valentin> to build a complete Target run ./scripts/Build-Target
20:31 < valentin> and ./scripts/Build-Target -job #stage-
20:31 < veki> no, I think how to build package that is not included in t2
20:32 < valentin> you just create a package:
20:32 < valentin> create a subdir in the package tree
20:32 < valentin> and write a .desc file
20:32 -!- azureus [~hfsjdi@dtm9-d9bbc950.pool.mediaWays.net] has quit [Read error: 60 (Operation timed out)]
20:32 < valentin> for example copy package/scientific/graphviz/graphviz.desc
20:33 < valentin> and replace the content of all fields
20:33 < valentin> you can keep the [P] field
20:33 < veki> ok
20:33 < veki> :-)
20:34 < valentin> if this is a cd player you could place it in package/audio/
20:36 < valentin> if you need information about some of the tags, just ask or look into the handbook
